Cortical thickness is closely associated with normal aging. As age increase cortical thickness decreases. This may result in reduced intelligence, and impaired cognition. Recent studies highlighted the impact of smoking on cortical thickness. Cortical thinning in leftmost medial orbitofrontal cortex was observed in smokers. This cortical thinning is proportional to number of cigarettes smoked a day. So heavier smoking results in thinning of cortical tissue. This cortical thinning also results in elevated risk of addiction to smoking.

A study conducted by researchers of University of Montreal revealed the fact that large number of teenagers are trying hard to get rid of smoking, but not able to succeed. A survey conducted on 319 Montreal teenagers showed that, incapability in giving up smoking have lead to lowering their confidence.Dr.Loughlin on of the researcher found that teen smokers will make their first serious attempt after 3 months of smoking and after smoking for 21 months they will find it difficult to quit smoking. So it is really a hectic task to make teens to quit smoke even if they have the desire to do so.

So steps must be taken as to prompt these teenagers to quit smoking. Methods like increasing the cost of cigarettes may reduce the number of smokers as cheap cigarettes discourage them to quit smoking. According to the survey taken by the Canadian Tobacco monitoring (statistics Canada) about 15 percent of the teenagers smoke daily or occasionally. Montreal investigation showed that within nine months teenagers become monthly smokers and in 19 months they become weekly smokers and within 23 months they become daily smokers.
