As more people endeavour to become consummate health food
consumers, food manufacturers are cashing in by touting their products
as ‘healthier’ than those of their competitors.More often than
not,’health’ foods are not what they claim to be.Most people have the
misconception that ‘health’ foods are nonfattening. In fact ,some are
real fat traps. If you want to lose fats effictively,it is necessary to
learn to decipher the labels .Always check the fat content listed on
food label and buy whatever has the lowest calorie. Here is a rundown
on the common terms of health food.Though all the highly ambiguous and
confusing terms arent easy to decode, the ultimate responsibility still
lies with the consumer. Dont be fooled by the term ‘cholesterol-free’
.Most people interpret it as healthy and safe to eat in unlimited
quantities. However, since cholestrol comes only from animal
products, this claim can still be used on vegetable products high in
saturated fats.Such products may be cholesterol -free,but they can
contribute to increased blood cholesterol levels.
Another label to watch out is ‘vegetable fat’.This term usually
refers to palm or coconut oils which are the exceptions to the general
vegetable-oil-is-better-than-animal-fat rule.These oils are used
widely in processed foods which have a high percentage of saturated
fats.Another label,’vegetarian’ may indicate that the food is meatless
but if it is deep-fried,baked in pastry, glistening with oil, then it is
certainly not fat-free.
